Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) announced Wednesday that his state will offer $1 million to five people who had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination.
“Two weeks from tonight on May 26th, we will announce a winner of a separate drawing for adults who have received at least their first dose of the vaccine,” DeWine tweeted.
“This announcement will occur each Wednesday for five weeks, and the winner each Wednesday will receive one million dollars,” DeWine added.

Winners must be Ohio residents and have received at least one dose of the vaccine before the drawing, DeWine added.
“I know that some may say, ‘DeWine, you’re crazy! This million-dollar drawing idea of yours is a waste of money,’” the Republican governor tweeted. “But truly, the real waste at this point in the pandemic — when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it — is a life lost to COVID-19.”
Various states have to allay vaccine hesitancy by offering residents financial incentives. West Virginia announced in April the state would give $100 to young adults between the ages of 16-35 if they get vaccinated.
Similarly, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan sought to boost vaccinations by offering $100 to state employees. To be eligible for the incentive, Maryland employees must provide proof of vaccination and agree to get any CDC recommended vaccine booster shot within 18 months.
