New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday that the city’s schools will return to in-person only learning in the fall following a year of hybrid instruction brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Democratic mayor said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe that schools will fully reopen in September and that students will not be offered a remote learning option.

“You can’t have a full recovery without full-strength schools, everyone back sitting in those classrooms, kids learning again,” de Blasio said on MSNBC. “And that’s what’s going to happen in September.”

“It’s time, it’s really time to go full-strength now,” de Blasio continued.

De Blasio added that the school system could operate, “if it had to,” under current Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, which stipulates that in-person learning can take place if children remain 3 feet apart. But he believes “by August, the CDC will relax those rules further to recognize the progress we’ve made in this country.”

New York City schools have offered a blend of in-person and remote learning for students over the past year where students attend in person for three days and online the other two, according to Reuters. Some parents chose to keep their kids home full-time.

De Blasio told MSNBC that the city plans to work with parents who may be hesitant to send their children back to school and invited them to go to the classrooms over the summer to see the changes the city has made to ensure student’s safety.

“We have proven that we can beat back COVID all over this country and schools open four months from now so I absolutely believe COVID will continue to go down and vaccinations will continue to go up.”

New York City’s COVID-19 data shows a decline in confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths as the city has a test positivity rate of 2.64 percent. Fewer than 500 cases have been reported in the past seven days with 908 confirmed cases over a 28-day period. Nearly 8 million vaccine doses have been administered in the city to date.

“Vaccinations are working, we’re beating back COVID, and our city is coming back strong,” de Blasio tweeted Monday morning.
