The Las Vegas-based bottled water company Real Water is under investigation and has been ordered by federal authorities to recall all products following reports of one death and a series of cases of liver illness from customers.
Marketed as an alkalized drinking water, the product’s labels state it’s “infused with negative ions.”
The filed federal complaint alleges the “manufacture and distribution of adulterated and/or misbranded bottled drinking water and chemical concentrate” by the company “may have been rendered injurious to health.”

Real Water is mostly distributed in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and California. The federal complaint has ended all production of the product and requires Real Water to recall and destroy all products produced prior to Wednesday. The company must also release its records of its operations to the Food and Drug Administration and allow for surprise inspections at its facilities.
In relation to Real Water, the Southern Nevada Health District reported the death of a woman in her 60s, who had underlying medical conditions, as well as 16 other cases of acute non-viral hepatitis linked to the product.
The company has not contested the order, however, it also hasn’t admitted wrongdoing. The company, President Brent Jones, and its attorneys haven’t commented at this time. The Guardian reported that telephone numbers for the company and for Jones are no longer in service.
