Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine was 93 percent effective against the virus in children ages 12 to 17 after one dose and 100 percent effective 14 days after the second, the company said Tuesday.
The company’s phase 2/3 trial, which enrolled 3,700 adolescent participants, additionally found “no significant safety concerns.” Moderna said in a press release that the company observed no cases of COVID-19 following “two doses of vaccine using the primary case definition, consistent with a vaccine efficacy of 100%”
The most common side effects were pain at the point of injection, muscle pain, fatigue and chills.
“We are encouraged that mRNA-1273 was highly effective at preventing COVID-19 in adolescents. It is particularly exciting to see that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine can prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection,” Stéphane Bancel, chief executive officer of Moderna, said in the release.
“We will submit these results to the U.S. FDA and regulators globally in early June and request authorization. We remain committed to doing our part to help end the COVID-19 pandemic,” Bancel added.

Pfizer, the maker of one of three COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in the United States, received emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 10 for use in children ages 12 to 15.
“Today’s action allows for a younger population to be protected from COVID-19, bringing us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy and to ending the pandemic,” acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said at the time.
More than 3.9 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to The American Academy of Pediatrics.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 58.5 percent of the U.S. population 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
