Story at a glance:
- Anthony Fauci wants medical records of the three Wuhan researchers who fell ill in 2019.
- Six miners fell sick from exploring a bat cave in 2012, which Wuhan scientists later took samples from.
- The origins of the coronavirus are still unknown.
Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden’s chief medical adviser, is requesting that China release the information of the three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology who were sick around November 2019 and had to be hospitalized.
In addition to the researchers, six miners fell sick after entering a bat cave in 2012, the same cave that Wuhan scientists took samples from, The Financial Times reported Friday.

Three of the miners died.
As Changing America previously reported, Fauci wants a full investigation into China’s connection with the COVID-19, saying he is “not convinced” the virus is natural.
“I would like to see the medical records of the three people who are reported to have got sick in 2019,” Fauci said. “Did they really get sick, and if so, what did they get sick with?
“The same with the miners who got ill years ago . . . What do the medical records of those people say? Was there [a] virus in those people? What was it? It is entirely conceivable that the origins of SARS-CoV-2 was in that cave and either started spreading naturally or went through the lab.”
As the exact origins of COVID-19 remain uncertain, there is a growing theory that the virus may have originated in a lab in Wuhan, although there is currently no definitive evidence to support that. Some, like Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), have pointed to “gain of function” research that may have been conducted, which increases the virulence and lethality of pathogens and viruses to understand how viruses may replicate and mutate in order to develop vaccinations.
The director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Shi Zhengli, told Science Magazine, reported by Chinese state media, that, “We have done bat virus surveillance in Hubei Province for many years, but have not found that bats in Wuhan or even the wider Hubei Province carry any coronaviruses that are closely related to SARS-CoV-2.”
The lab-leak theory mounted when former President Trump, briefed on the matter, told a reporter that has seen evidence that may suggest the virus originated in a lab. Pressed to clarify, Trump said: “I can’t tell you that. I’m not allowed to tell you that.”
Trump had also blamed China for the virus, calling COVID-19 “China virus” and “Wuhan virus,” among other derogatory terms.
President Biden has ordered aides to heighten their investigation into the virus’s origins and to report back in 90 days.
