Story at a glance

  • The delta variant is surging in the U.K., prompting the CDC to issue a Level 4 travel advisory.
  • All travelers returning to the U.S. from the U.K. are advised to get tested within 3 to 5 days of returning.
  • The delta variant composes a high percentage of new COVID-19 infections in the U.S.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) increased its travel advisory warnings to the United Kingdom to a Level 4 of COVID-19 transmission.

Level 4, or “Very High,” implies that U.S. residents should avoid travel to the U.K. Those who do are advised to be fully vaccinated.

“Travelers should follow recommendations or requirements in the United Kingdom, including wearing a mask and staying 6 feet apart from others,” the CDC writes.

Upon returning to the U.S., travelers are advised to get a viral test in the three to five days after they land.

This comes as the delta variant is surging in many European countries, as well as in the states. New infections have increased by 140 percent over the past two weeks, according to national data compiled by The New York Times, and more CDC data reports that the delta variant comprises an average of 31.1 percent of all cases.

The data is from the week of June 19.

England, alternatively, has taken an unusual step and lifted all COVID-19 restrictions despite a major uptick in new cases.
