Two nasal spray coronavirus vaccines developed in Thailand are set to begin human trials by the end of 2021.
The vaccines based on the adenovirus and influenza are being developed by the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said Wednesday, according to Reuters.
Thanadirek said the trials will begin if approved by the country’s regulators, after successful trials on mice. The nasal vaccines tests will also measure how they stack up against the highly infectious delta variant first discovered in India. The nasal vaccines could be approved for wider use in 2022 pending successful phase 2 trials.

Meanwhile, other vaccines developed in Thailand, including Chulalongkorn University’s mRNA vaccine, are due to start trials later in August, Reuters reported. The country primarily uses China’s Sinovac, AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccines, while the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is used as a booster for fully vaccinated health care workers.
The country’s health ministry expects approximately 35 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine will be available in Thailand by the end of the year, according to Reuters.
The U.S. has donated 1.5 million doses to Thailand thus far as part of the Biden administration’s vaccine sharing plan, according to data released by the White House last week.
Thailand reported nearly 20,000 new cases and 235 deaths in the past day, Johns Hopkins University data shows. Roughly 6 percent of the country is fully vaccinated with more than 21 million vaccine doses administered. There have been nearly 796,000 cases and 6,588 deaths in Thailand to date.
