The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that all pregnant people get vaccinated against COVID-19, it announced on Wednesday.
The recommendation also includes those who are breastfeeding. The CDC cited an increased risk for severe illness in pregnant people compared to people who are not pregnant due to changes that occur in the body during pregnancy.

“CDC encourages all pregnant people or people who are thinking about becoming pregnant and those breastfeeding to get vaccinated to protect themselves from COVID-19,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a news release. “The vaccines are safe and effective, and it has never been more urgent to increase vaccinations as we face the highly transmissible Delta variant and see severe outcomes from COVID-19 among unvaccinated pregnant people.”
Currently, 50.3 percent of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
