Vietnamese authorities delivered a five-year jail sentence to a man who was convicted of defying the COVID-19 quarantine restrictions and spreading the virus, according to state media.
Le Van Tri, 28, was convicted at a one-day trial at the People’s Court of the southern province of Ca Mau of “spreading dangerous infectious diseases,” the state-run Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, according to Reuters.
Ca Mau, Vietnam’s southernmost province, has reported only 191 cases and two deaths since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Reuters.

“Tri infected eight people, one of whom died due to the virus after one month of treatment,” the outlet added, per Reuters.
A Vietnamese court in Ho Chi Minh City in March sentenced a 29-year-old flight attendant to 2 years on similar charges.

There have been 536,788 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 13,385 deaths in Vietnam, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). Vietnam has administered nearly 19 million doses of coronavirus vaccinations as of Aug. 27.
