US passes 700,000 COVID-19 deaths

The U.S. on Friday eclipsed 700,000 deaths due to COVID-19 while continuing to lead the world in cases and deaths, according to a new Reuters tally

Reuters reported that the U.S. averaged more than 2,000 deaths per day over the past week with a seven day rolling average of around 117,000 reported daily cases after peaking in the middle of September. 

Coronavirus deaths in the U.S. account for about 14 percent of pandemic related deaths worldwide. 

Slightly more than 64 percent of the total U.S. population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 55.6 percent are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Roughly 2.2 percent of the eligible population have taken a booster shot.

The Reuters tally shows the global death toll nearing 5 million, yet the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that the number of new cases and deaths each declined by 10 percent in the past week. WHO said there had been an estimated 3.3 million new infections and roughly 55,000 deaths in that timeframe. The largest drop-offs were in the Middle East, the Western Pacific and the Americas.

The number of cases in the U.S. fell by nearly 31 percent, although the U.S. case count was the highest worldwide over the same period at more than 765,000. There have been more than 43 million COVID-19 cases recorded in the U.S. to date.
