All workers employed by the city of Pittsburgh have until Dec. 22 to comply with the city’s vaccine mandate or obtain a medical or religious exemption, according to an executive order signed on Monday.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto signed an executive order on Monday, which states that city workers will be subject to employment actions including discipline up to termination, if they do not provide proof of vaccination. The mayor cited the county’s increasing case count as a primary reason behind it.

“We have all been through so much over the past year and a half as we watched COVID-19 shut down our businesses, our schools and sent people to shelter in place,” Peduto said in a press release. “The science is clear that getting the vaccine protects us from the severity of COVID and its variants that are once again filling our hospitals.”

“It is our responsibility to act collectively to protect both our employees and the public so that we can move on and continue our recovery from the pandemic,” he added.

A spokesperson told the Associated Press on Tuesday the city does not have an accurate count given a previous county-wide policy that required only non-union workers to report their vaccination status.

Approximately 58 percent of Allegany County — which includes Pittsburgh — is fully vaccinated, according to data compiled by The New York Times.
