- San Francisco is set to expand its indoor proof vaccination mandate to children ages 5 to 11, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines for the group earlier this week.
- “We definitely want to wait and make sure that children have an opportunity to get vaccinated,” San Francisco Health Officer Susan Philip said Tuesday at town hall.
- “That will happen no sooner than about eight weeks after the vaccine is available to kids,” she continued. “So there will be a limited time in which there will not be those requirements, but then at some point, 5 to 11-year-olds will also have to show proof of vaccination to access some of those same settings.”
San Francisco is set to expand its indoor proof vaccination mandate to children ages 5 to 11, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines for the group earlier this week.
The city would become the first in the U.S. to require children to show proof of vaccination to access certain indoor venues, NBC reported. But city leaders said there will be a transition period to allow for vaccination.
The rule would apply to venues such as restaurants, gyms and sporting events, according to NBC.

The CDC’s recommendation expanded vaccine access to around 28 million children across the U.S.
White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said on Monday “the kids vaccination program will be fully up and running” the week of Nov. 8.
“Parents will be able to schedule appointments at convenient sites they know and trust to get their kids vaccinated,’ Zients added.
Approximately 75 percent of San Francisco is fully vaccinated, according to data compiled by the New York Times. The city has recorded 19 deaths in the past two weeks.
