New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday that kids will be eligible to receive a $100 vaccination credit.

Adults across NYC were already eligible for the credit, but de Blasio is hopeful families will seize the opportunity to earn a little more money amid the holiday season by getting their kids vaccinated.

“Good news, kids are eligible for the $100 vaccine incentive. So, we really want kids to take advantage, families take advantage of that,” de Blasio said at a news conference. “Everyone could use a little more money around the holidays. But, most importantly, we want our kids and our families to be safe.”

De Blasio’s announcement follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation to authorize Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11. The agency’s decision will open up vaccine access to around 28 million kids across the U.S.

White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said ahead of the CDC’s recommendation on Wednesday that “the kids vaccination program will be fully up and running” the week of Nov. 8.

“Parents will be able to schedule appointments at convenient sites they know and trust to get their kids vaccinated,’ Zients said.

Nearly 74 percent of NYC residents have received at least one vaccine dose while more than 67 percent are fully vaccinated.
