Almost 1 million children will get COVID-19 vaccines in first week, White House says

The White House has said around 900,000 children ages 5 to 11 will have received one dose of coronavirus vaccine during their first week of eligibility, NPR reported Wednesday

The number represents about 3 percent of children in the age group, and the White House said about 700,000 additional vaccination appointments have been scheduled, according to NPR. 

“This does not include appointments being made, for example, at places like pediatricians’ offices, children hospitals and other sites,” an official told the outlet. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized Pfizer’s vaccine for the age group on Nov. 2, opening the two-dose series to 28 million kids across the country.

A recent Kaiser Health poll found that 27 percent of parents were “eager to get a vaccine for their younger child” as soon as one was available. Another third said they would wait and see how the vaccine was working before making their decision. 

Around 67 percent of the U.S. population has received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 58.5 percent is fully vaccinated. 

Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech submitted a request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday to open their COVID-19 booster to all adults 18 and older.
