The National Hockey League is postponing all games for a week for the Colorado Avalanche and the Florida Panthers as COVID-19 cases surge across the league.
The decision was made “due to concern with the number of positive cases within the last two days as well as concern for continued COVID spread in the coming days,” the league said in a statement.
Postponements for the Calgary Flames were additionally suspended through Dec. 23, and the training facilities for all three teams have been closed. Meanwhile, a Saturday match-up between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens has also been postponed. The Bruins reportedly competed Thursday evening down seven players.
ESPN reported that at the time of the announcement, the Avalanche had five players out on COVID-19 protocols, and seven players were out for the Panthers. And Calgary’s outbreak has affected a total of 18 members, including players and coaches.
The league recently enhanced its COVID-19 safety measures, mandating daily testing and implementing restrictions for teams while on the road. Updated safety precautions are expected to last through January.

In the National Football League, a contest scheduled for Saturday between the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders is being rescheduled for Monday, ESPN reported. The Browns, as of Friday morning, had a total of 24 players who either tested positive or were out from the previous week due to COVID-19 protocols.
Sources reportedly told the network that games between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Football Team as well as the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks could be moved to Tuesday.
