Buck Sexton on new Mexican president: Look at what social justice did to Venezuela’s economy

Hill.TV host Buck Sexton said on Monday that Mexicans should look at the impact social justice had on the Venezuelan economy after Mexico elected left-wing populist Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the country’s presidency on Sunday.

“I would hope that the Mexican people would also look to their southeast a bit at Venezuela and what can happen when social justice runs economic policies, because the results can be less than anticipated,” Sexton told co-host Krystal Ball on “Rising.”

Venezuela is in the midst of a major economic and political crisis, which has seen a dramatic drop in oil prices, high inflation and widespread food and medicine shortages.{mosads}

López Obrador sailed to victory in Mexico’s presidential election on Sunday, garnering over 50 percent of the vote.

Opponents of the former Mexico City mayor warned that López Obrador’s policies could damage Mexico’s economy and transform the country into “another Venezuela.”

López Obrador has called for doubling pensions for the elderly but has said there will be no nationalization of the country’s business sector.

President Trump congratulated López Obrador in a tweet on Monday.

“Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico. I look very much forward to working with him,” Trump tweeted. “There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!”
