Conservative legal strategist Matthew Larosiere on Tuesday referred to President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, as “milquetoast.”
“We’re hearing a lot of talk, a lot of saber rattling saying this is an extremely conservative pick that is the second most conservative judge on the bench. It’s actually not true. The guy’s pretty milquetoast. He’s pretty average in terms of a conservative judge,”Larosiere, who is an advocate for the firm “Young Voices,” told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”
{mosads}Conservatives have largely praised Trump’s pick of Kavanaugh, citing his experiencing working on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and in the White House counsel’s office during the George W. Bush administration.
“There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving,” Trump said on Monday, adding that Kavanaugh would put aside his political views “to do what the law and the Constitution require.”
Kavanaugh graduated from Yale University and Yale Law School, which were said to be qualifications that appealed to the president.
If confirmed by the Senate, Kavanaugh’s replacement of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has often been a swing vote on controversial issues, including abortion rights, could cement the conservative majority on the nation’s highest court for years to come.
