Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Wednesday said he regrets his appearance on a radio show hosted by Infowars founder Alex Jones.
“I would not go back on Alex Jones’s show,” Gaetz told Hill.TV co-hosts Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”
“Upon further reflection, I think the things that Alex Jones has said and done are so hurtful to so many people that a member of Congress should not grace that platform and legitimize it,” Gaetz added.
Jones’s Infowars website is known for promoting conspiracy theories, including one that says the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., was a hoax. That prompted families of Sandy Hook victims to file lawsuits against Jones in April and May.
Gaetz appeared on Jones’s show in January to discuss a then-classified memo by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). The controversial memo accused the FBI of improperly using surveillance tools to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016.
Infowars came under renewed scrutiny recently after Facebook faced backlash over conspiracy sites on its social media platform.
