President Donald Trump’s legal team has admitted that his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, secretly made a recording of a conversation in which both men discussed making payments to a former Playboy model who claims to have had an affair with Trump. Could the audio record be damaging to the president? On Monday, Estuardo Rodriguez and Bre Payton joined “Rising” to discuss the recording and its possible implications for Trump.
“It sounds like insurance to me,” Rodriguez said. “There’s a clear pattern here for Cohen. He’s been covering for the president. At some point, he’s also seen that the president at some point walks away from some of the people who have been with him for a long time if it’s convenient to him.”
Nonetheless, however, as “Rising” co-host Krystal Ball noted, the Trump legal team has waived its right to block the recording from being used in court proceedings against Cohen. According to Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, the recording contains nothing negative about Trump.
“We’ve been down this road before where something that has been reported about something turns out that that’s totally false,” Payton said. At the same time, however, the recording could be damaging to Trump in another context, according to Payton.
“If it really is as bad as everyone is saying it is, it raises doubts about his other denials about other women,” she said.
Since he began his political career in 2015, 19 separate women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct. He has proclaimed his innocence against all of the charges.
