Conservative writer: Impeachment talk will scare Republicans

Federalist senior contributor Benjamin Weingarten said on Wednesday that talk of impeaching President Trump during the 2018 midterms will end up scaring Republican voters.

“I want the left to go as far left as possible as a conservative because I think what you’re going to see, ultimately, as we get towards this election is — impeachment is going to become a dirty ‘I’ word in this election,” Weingarten told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”

“That is going to scare Republicans who see Supreme Court justices, tax reform, deregulatory agenda, out of Iran deal, embassy to Jerusalem,” he continued, citing Trump’s achievements in office.

“None of that stuff has even been out there. It’s almost like they haven’t been campaigning because the Democrats have sucked all of the oxygen out of the room,” he said.

Weingarten’s comments come as some Democratic lawmakers and candidates, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Texas Senate candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) to have called for Trump’s impeachment ahead of the 2018 midterms.

However, other Democrats, such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have cautioned members of the party not to push for impeachment during the midterms, saying it would benefit Republicans.

“I don’t think we should be talking about impeachment. I’ve been very clear right from the start,” Pelosi said.

“On the political side I think it’s a gift to the Republicans,” she added. “We want to talk about what they’re doing to undermine working families in our country and what we are doing to increase their payrolls and lower their costs.”
