Democratic National Committee (DNC) spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said Monday that Republican candidates running on pro-Trump platforms won’t fare well in November’s midterm elections.
“I saw the RNC [spokeswoman] on your show last week and they were saying that they’re running on Trump – that’s insane to me,” Hinojosa told Hill.TV co-hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”
“If they’re running on Donald Trump for the midterm elections? They’re not going to succeed,” Hinojosa added.
Hinojosa was referring to comments made Friday by Republican Nation Committee (RNC) spokeswoman, Kayleigh McEnany, who said there were “very few” Republican candidates not seeking Trump’s support in key races across the country.
“Candidates in the GOP are 15 times more likely to mention Trump than were candidates to tout President Obama or Bush – that tells you all you need to know about this president and the base,” McEnany told Hill.TV.
But Hinojosa pointed to the popularity of Democratic incumbents like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) who are in states that Trump won.
“Voters want a voice that’s going to fight for them,” Hinojos said. “That’s why you see Joe Manchin in West Virginia doing well…we have candidates who are talking about the issues and not just rubber-stamping an agenda.”
Manchin faces a tough battle for reelection in a state Trump won by more than 40 percentage points in the 2016.
But his odds so far are looking pretty strong, with the RealClear Politics polling average and a recent Monmouth University survey, showing him with a small but clear lead over Republican challenger Patrick Morrisey.
