Rosie O’Donnell thinks Democrats need to step up and take a more progressive stance ahead of the midterm elections.
“I always wish the Democrats would take a more active, progressive role,” O’Donnell told Hill.TV co-host Jamal Simmons on whether Democrats were doing enough to provide a counter-narrative to President Trump.
O’Donnell has been a vocal supporter of Democratic candidates in the past, including 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. But the comedian said she no longer considers herself a Democrat after they failed to impeach President George W. Bush.
“I stopped being a Democrat when no-one called for articles of impeachment against George [W.] Bush for starting an illegal war,” O’Donnell told Hill.TV.
Her comments come after the actress led a group of Broadway performers in a sing-along protest against the Trump administration in front of the White House on Monday night. It was part of the “Kremlin Annex” protest, which started after the Helsinki Summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
O’Donnell turned to her friend and SiriusXM “On Broadway” host, Seth Rudetsky, to help, but she said the event was largely unplanned.
“I just figured this would be a good time for me to show up. I had the week off from where I was working in Boston, and I called Seth Rudetsky who is like the ‘Broadway King’ and said, ‘could you do me a favor and find me sixty kids who can sing and let’s go sing some inspiration songs at this protest,’ ” she said.
Several other Broadway stars also ended up attending the event, including cast members from “Wicked” and “Hamilton.”
