Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) told Hill.TV this week that talks of Trump’s impeachment were “just a premature topic at this moment,” the latest sign of a divide among congressional Democrats about whether to pursue the matter.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) has been vocal in his push to impeach President Trump, even introducing articles of impeachment two separate times. Both efforts failed in House floor votes.
House Democratic leaders have voiced concerns over impeachment talk, fearing it will give Republicans an edge when voters head to the polls on Nov. 6.
Trump has made impeachment a midterm issue to help motivate his base. He recently told a crowd in Montana, “If I get impeached, it’s your fault because you didn’t vote.”
If the Democrats win back the majority in the House, impeachment proceedings could become a possibility. For now, many Democrats don’t want to go there.
“I don’t want to talk about impeachment until we have that step,” Cuellar told Hill.TV on Wednesday.
