Progressive strategist says GOP has inflicted ‘permanent damage’ with women on Kavanaugh confirmation

Progressive activist Jesse Lee said on Wednesday that Republicans have underestimated the damage they have done with women by rallying around Justice Brett Kavanaugh even as he faced several sexual misconduct allegations.

“I think Republicans are drastically underestimating the permanent damage that they have done with women in this country by rallying behind a crusade of basically, survivors are liars,” Lee, vice president of communications at the Center for American Progress, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”

Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court last week after a tumultuous nomination process in the Senate after three women came forward with sexual misconduct allegations. Kavanaugh has strongly denied the accusations.

President Trump vocally supported Kavanaugh and mocked his first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, over her testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, at a campaign rally last month.

“36 years ago, this happened,” Trump said. “How did you get home?” he continued. “‘I don’t remember.’ How’d you get there? ‘I don’t remember.’ Where is the place? ‘I don’t remember.’ How many years ago was it? ‘I don’t know.

“That was Trump’s rally cry,” Lee said. “Donald Trump went to a political rally and mocked a survivor, slandering her.”

Conservative strategist Mattie Duppler, founder and vice president of Forward Strategies, argued that Trump was pointing out inconsistencies in Ford’s testimony.

“No, that is absurd. He pointed out the inconsistencies in her testimony,” Duppler said.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation has fired up Democratic and Republican voters less than a month out from the midterms.

Democrats have criticized Kavanaugh’s nomination to the high court, citing the sexual misconduct allegations against him as well as his judicial temperament.

Republicans, on the other hand, have labeled liberals and Democrats protesting Kavanaugh as an “angry mob.”
