RNC spokeswoman says midterms will be referendum on Trump ‘in a good way’

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Cassie Smedile on Tuesday acknowledged that the midterms will be a referendum on President Trump’s first two years in office.

“Well, I think in many ways, yes, but in a good way. I mean, think of all of the good news,” Smedile said of whether voters were voting on Trump’s performance in office.

“So the president is saying — you know, typically when things are going well, people don’t go to the ballot box to say thank you. They go to the ballot box when they want something more done,” she continued with Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”

“So the president is saying, ‘all of this good news, it’s not a coincidence. There’s a reason that it’s happening: That’s because you elected me, I made promises, and I’m keeping them with the help of these Republican majorities. We’ve got a good thing going, let’s keep it going,'” she said. “And that’s where you also see him talking about what we have next to do.”

Recent polling shows that opinions on Trump could play a major role in voters’ decisions on Tuesday.

A USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll conducted last month found that 58 percent of likely voters said that Trump will have “a lot” of impact when they cast their ballots.

Republicans appear poised to keep control of the Senate, with various Democratic senators on defense in states that Trump won in 2016.

However, the GOP is on the defense in the House, with Democrats needing to gain just 23 seats to win a majority.
