Dem strategist says Trump’s incompetence has been a ‘lift’ for the party

Democratic strategist Delvone Michael said on Thursday that President Trump has been a lift for the party because any other Republican president would have been better able to push the GOP’s agenda.

“The wholesale incompetence and bombasity of the Trump administration has definitely been a lift for us, even though we don’t feel that way,” Michael, a senior political strategist with Working Families, told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”

“Thank God. Any other competent Republican would have gotten tons more accomplished,” he continued.

Trump has fulfilled a series of campaign promises including renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and passing a series of tax cuts.

Democrats, however, took control of the House in the midterms, which were widely viewed as a referendum on Trump’s first term as president.

Conservative strategist Mattie Duppler, meanwhile, said that any other Republican president would have accomplished what Trump has.

“All of the policy wins, especially for me, who’s a budget, fiscal policy person, all of those would have been possible with another Republican candidate,” Duppler, founder and president of Forward Strategies, said.

“The question of all of the other extraneous liabilities that come with having President Trump as president, we wouldn’t have those with President Rubio or President Scott Walker. We would probably have tax reform. We would have some of the things that you would always get with a Republican because that was just where the environment was pointed in 2016,” she continued.
