Dem strategist says party needs to have a ‘robust primary’ in 2020

Democratic strategist Kristen Hawn said on Monday that it would be healthy for the Democratic Party to have a “robust” 2020 primary field.

“I think primaries are healthy. I think we need to have a robust Democratic primary,” Hawn, a senior strategist at Agenda Global, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”

“I am a more-the-merrier person. I think you come out of it better in the end, even though as a moderate Democrat, we have to run against people on the far left. It’s challenging sometimes,” she continued.

“I think that you’ve got a lot of great people out there,” she said.

Hawn’s comments come as speculation builds around what is expected to be a very crowded Democratic presidential primary.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) announced last week she was forming a presidential exploratory committee, and took her first trip to Iowa since the announcement over the weekend.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that former Vice President Joe Biden is slated to make a decision on 2020 within the next two weeks.

Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) are among the other names that have been floated.
