Progressive activist says O’Rourke, others Instagram Live posts could be a distraction

Progressive activist Igor Volsky on Friday said that Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) and other political candidates distract from issues when they post social media of them doing nonpolitical activities, such as O’Rourke’s visit to the dentist this week.

“If he decides to run, I would want to see, personally, a candidate who’s strong on the substance, who has a vision, and a lot of this stuff, the skateboarding, to me distracts,” Volsky, executive director of activist group Guns Down, told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”

O’Roruke, who lost his bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) last year, posted a video of himself skateboarding through a Whataburger restaurant’s parking lot during the campaign.

The congressman is one of many potential Democratic presidential contenders.

On Thursday, O’Rourke recorded his dentist visit on Instagram Live and interviewed his dental hygienist about growing up on the U.S. southern border.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) made headlines last month when she interacted with viewers on Instagram Live while drinking a beer after she announced her presidential exploratory committee.

“On one hand, it brings people in, which I like, but on the other hand, I just want you to pair it with actual substance,” Volsky said.
