Conservative commentator Kimberly Klacik on Thursday told Hill.TV that most Americans do not have a use for an automatic weapon.
“I consider myself a moderate Republican, and I’m okay with some kind of gun control,” Klacik, the chairwoman of the Baltimore County Communications Outreach Committee, told hosts Krystal Ball and Shermichael Singleton on “Rising.”
“I don’t think that we need AKs-whatever going off and going around. No one needs that. You’re not shooting a deer with some of these automatic weapons,” she continued.
She went on to say that she thinks many on the right think that when gun control measures are discussed they feel like it is infringing on their rights to protect their homes.
“For some, I think especially on the Republican side, they think that you’re coming for their guns. You’re coming for their right to really secure themselves, and their families, and their homes,” she said.
“Illegal guns are a problem,” she said. “I think we would be not really telling the whole story if we said that just those who are here legally are causing the problem because it’s not just those with the background checks. Illegal guns are a problem as well.”
Klacik’s comments come amid the one year anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last year, which left 17 people dead and numerous others injured.
The shooting led to the creation of the March for Our Lives movement, which has called for stricter gun laws and regulations.
