Former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi told Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Friday that he would have been willing to discuss wearing a wire to record President Trump after the firing of FBI director James Comey.
Rossi also said he would have been willing to discuss the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office.
“President Trump’s lucky I’m not in the Department of Justice because after Comey’s firing, I would have discussed the 25th amendment,” Rossi told hosts Krystal Ball and Mattie Duppler. “I would have discussed wearing a wire, and I would own it.”
“I would say ‘listen, these are normal law enforcement discussions, and we’re not going to back away. We did have a discussion about the 25th, and we definitely had a discussion about the wire,'” he continued.
Former deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe revealed earlier this week that there were concerns within the bureau about whether Trump was fit to be president and whether the Cabinet should be brought in to organize efforts to remove him via the 25th Amendment.
The New York Times reported last year that former deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein considered secretly recording Trump, and discussed removing Trump from office via the 25th amendment with other DOJ officials.
A spokesperson for Rosenstein said that the former DOJ official “rejects” McCabe’s version of events, referring to his “recitation of events as inaccurate and factually incorrect.”
Trump for his part hit back against McCabe’s comments in a tweet on Thursday.
“McCabe is a disgrace to the FBI and a disgrace to our Country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” the president wrote.
“No one is immune from being investigated. The president of the United States is not above the law,” Rossi said. “A tactic used by law enforcement is wearing a wire. So I don’t know why they’re embarrassed to admit that, and of course, they’re probably trying to save their career[s].”
Rossi, who is a Democrat, has been critical in the past of Trump’s comments on the Russia probe.
