Liberal comedian Trae Crowder said in an interview that aired Tuesday on Hill.TV’s “Rising” that television host Bill Maher’s recent comment that rural conservatives want to be in the “big prosperity party” with coastal liberals is an example of why red parts of the country find themselves at odds with blue parts.
“It’s an example of the whole narrative of why the red states have such a problem with the blue parts of the country, because they feel like they look down on them, and then you see something like this and you can understand it,” Crowder, an author and comedian also known as “the liberal redneck,” told hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on Monday.
Maher made headlines on his show “Real Time with Bill Maher” this week, telling viewers that red-state voters are “so pissed off” because they want to be like coastal, liberal voters.
“Maybe that has something to do with why Trump voters are so obsessed with ‘owning the libs,’ because the libs own everything else,” Maher said.
“The blue parts of America are having a big prosperity party while the big sea of red feels like their invitation got lost in the mail,” he continued.
The comments drew criticism, with a number of pundits calling the remarks arrogant.
“As someone who grew up in rural, deep-red America my whole life, and still has roots there, I do feel like I should say no they very do not want to be coastal liberals,” Crowder said. “He said something like they don’t hate us, they want to be us … no, no, they hate you. I don’t know if that makes you feel better or worse, but no, they hate you.”
