President Trump’s chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Thursday that the economy would play a central role in the 2020 presidential race.
“The economy is going to be key,” Kudlow said at The Hill’s Newsmaker Series event in Washington, D.C.
“We are proud of our record on the economy, and the prosperity that’s developing, which I think is going to broaden, and strengthen,” Kudlow added. “That’s going to be crucial.”
“I’m sure he [President Trump] will be quite happy to run. He’s a growth president.”
Kudlow’s comments came as the Labor Department reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits dropped below 200,000 last week for the first time since 1969.
The economy added 196,000 jobs in March after adding 33,000 in February.
Trump frequently touts the growing economy under his administration, while Democrats say the growth is an extension of the gains made during the Obama administration.
Economists expect economic growth to slow after growing by 2.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2018.
