Comedian and activist Chelsea Handler said during an interview that aired on Hill.TV’s “Rising” that President Trump’s election in 2016 was not only a personal trigger for her, it also represented for many Americans their lives becoming “unhinged.”
“Once I could identify the culprit of my pain, which in my instance was my brother dying when I was 9 years old,” Handler told Hill.TV correspondent Jamal Simmons. “Once I was able to pinpoint that, I realized so much of the anger I was holding with me for so many years was related to him and it’s not necessarily about Trump.”
“Trump was a trigger for me … there’s another word that I never thought I’d use, but it’s a perfect word to describe it because it represented to so many people their lives becoming unhinged,” she continued.
Since Trump’s 2016 election, there has been a wave of political activism coming out of Hollywood.
Last year, Handler cited Trump’s presidency as one of the main reasons why she left her talk show on Netflix and became a political activist.
“Like so many across the country, the past presidential election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me,” she said in a statement on Twitter at the time announcing the end of her show. “From the national level down to the grass roots, it’s clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation.”
Handler told Hill.TV that following Trump’s election she was “hysterical” and said she needed to take a step back.
“I was hysterical and I needed to get control of myself in order to do something positive with all of my outrage and harness it into something good,” she said.
Handler is currently on tour promoting her new book, “Life Will Be the Death of Me: … and You Too!”, which describes how she went from “living in a privileged bubble” to her path to “self-discovery.”
