President Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani said in an interview that aired Hill.TV’s Rising on Friday that Trump’s legal team’s counter-report to special counsel Robert Mueller’s report will detail Attorney General William Barr’s conclusion on obstruction of justice.
“The response will essentially do in more detail essentially what the attorney general did,” Giuliani told hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on Thursday.
“That’s not because we’re copying [but] because that’s the law,” he said. “The law is, how can you possibly have an obstruction when you didn’t commit a crime, you’re being investigated for a crime you didn’t commit, and all the things they’re accusing you of, you did in order to defend yourself?”
Mueller’s report detailed the findings of his 22-month investigation into Russia’s election interference and possible obstruction of justice by Trump, stating that his team had been unable to establish that there was coordination between Trump’s campaign and Moscow in the run-up to the 2016 election. Mueller declined to take a position on whether Trump obstructed justice with the probe, though his report details 10 instances of potential obstruction of justice involving Trump.
Barr wrote in his summary of the report last month that he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined that the evidence was “not sufficient” to establish obstruction of justice.
Giuliani said in the same interview that the counterreport would be released once the public has fully digested Mueller’s final report.
“We’re really going through it and seeing what we have to rebut,” he said. “At this point, we’re pretty comfortable that people are digesting it, and we’ll see how it works out.”
“We’ll put it out. I mean, it’s a document that you need even for history, but as to exactly when we do it, we’re sort of taking the temperature,” he said.
