Dem strategist says Trump fight against House Dem subpoenas is ‘smart politically’

Democratic strategist Joe McLean on Thursday told Hill.TV that it’s politically smart of President Trump to say he will fight the subpoenas from House Democrats.

“I think that Trump is actually engaged in a really smart political campaign,” McLean, who led former President Obama’s Senate campaign in 2004, told hosts Buck Sexton and Juanita Tolliver.

“He’s going to lose on all this stuff. He’s going to lose in court. He’s going to have to [give] up his stuff. We’re going to see his taxes. We’re going to see his records,” he continued.

“Ultimately over the next six or eight months or a year, he’s going to lose all these cases because it’s established precedent.”

“But it’s very smart politically for him to do this because he’s playing to his base,” he said. “He’s always played most strongly to his radical Trumpist base, and that’s what he’s doing now.”

Trump’s move to fight subpoenas sets the stage for a showdown between the White House and House Democrats, who are investigating Trump.

The president suggested this week that Democrats are investigating his administration and issuing subpoenas for political reasons, suggesting it would help the party in the 2020 election.

“Look, these aren’t impartial people,” Trump said. “The Democrats are trying to win 2020. They’re not going to win with the people that I see, and they’re not going to win against me.”
