Democratic strategist Don Calloway on Monday described President Trump’s plan to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Tiger Woods as “Trump giving an award to his buddy.”
“This is our nation’s highest civilian honor,” Calloway, who is CEO of Pine Street Strategies, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”
“This is Trump giving an award to his buddy,” he said.
“I think there’s a whole lot of people who are in the line for the Presidential Medal of Freedom before brother Eldrick,” Calloway said, referring to the golfer who was born Eldrick Tont Woods.
Calloway added that he did not think Woods has done enough to aid communities in need.
“He had a dramatic opportunity to do a lot of stuff in terms of connecting with underprivileged communities, and I just don’t think he’s done it over the course of now 25 years in the public eye,” Calloway said.
Trump is set to honor Woods with the award in the White House Rose Garden on Monday. Woods last month won the Masters Tournament.
The president has come under fire for selecting Woods for the award, with critics suggesting a conflict of interest. Woods’s company, TGR Design, designed the Trump World Golf Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to Bloomberg News.
