Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) called for President Trump to remain consistent when asked about his recent rhetoric on escalating tensions with Iran.
“Every leader speaks from their own language, and their own tone,” Green, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti on “Rising.”
“I might say it differently. This is President Trump’s way of saying it,” he continued. “President Trump is being President Trump.”
“I think the most important thing now for him is to just be consistent and be consistently himself, and I think the world will filter that,” he said.
The House and Senate are set to be briefed by the president’s top security officials on the Trump administration’s Iran policy as lawmakers voice concerns about rising tensions in the Persian Gulf.
Trump has threatened that war with Tehran would mean “the official end of Iran.”
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been on the uptick since Trump withdrew the U.S. with the multination Iran nuclear deal last year.
Iran, in turn, has begun to roll back its own commitments to the deal and revealed on Monday that it is quadrupling its uranium production capacity.
“Do I think we’re any safer than before when we were in the deal? And the answer to that question is no, I don’t think we’re any safer or any less safe,” Green said. “I think it’s about where we were, only now, we’re informed and we’re treating Iran as they really are.”
