Hill.TV host Saagar Enjeti says the Labour Party’s defeat in the United Kingdom’s general election represents a “dire warning” for Democrats.
“Mass immigration, embrace of social justice, making fun of social conservatism fundamentally is an insult to the many working class voters that progressive economic policies are designed to help,” Enjeti said Friday.
“Corbynism is a dire warning to the American left,” Enjeti added, referring to Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the U.K.’s Labour Party.
Corbyn suffered a devastating loss in the U.K. elections on Thursday to the country’s Conservative Party.
As of Friday evening, the Labour Party won 203 seats compared to the Conservative Party’s 365 seats. Corbyn called the loss “very disappointing” and said that he would not lead his party in future general elections, according to the BBC.
The party had primarily run on increasing spending on public services and promising to renegotiate a Brexit deal to give voters the option to stay in the European Union.
The loss was blamed on a variety of factors, including Corbyn’s leadership and his failure to address anti-Semitism within his ranks.
Democrats, meanwhile, have largely stayed out of Thursday’s U.K. elections.
In the days leading up to the U.K. election, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said he would be “loath to comment about people’s elections in other parts of the world.”
