Hill.TV’s Saagar Enjeti rips celebrities for pushing ‘political agenda’ at Golden Globes

Hill.TV host Saagar Enjeti argued Tuesday that the 77th annual Golden Globes over the weekend was too political.

Enjeti said Hollywood celebrities should have heeded the advice of Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais, who said award recipients should avoid making political speeches because they are in “no position to lecture the public about anything.”

“There could be no fitting end to the Golden Globes Sunday than the stars continuing to use the Golden Globes to push a political agenda even after Gervais’s epic warning,” Enjeti said.

Hollywood award shows have taken an increasingly political tone in recent years, particularly since President Trump took office.

While some celebrities on Sunday used their acceptance speeches to highlight the 2020 elections, others like comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres drew attention to the wildfires that have ravaged Australia.

Gervais also took aim at celebrities who worked for former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

“Our next presenter starred in Netflix’s ‘Birdbox’, a movie where people survive by acting like they don’t see a thing — sort of like working for Harvey Weinstein,” he said.

While some questioned the timing of the joke, Enjeti and others on social media praised Gervais for calling out actors and industry executives who may have purposely overlooked Weinstein’s alleged behavior.

“Gervais highlights that a key element of the Harvey Weinstein story — it’s not just that he himself was a horrific monster, but that banality of power in Hollywood made it perfectly acceptable to cover up his crimes that didn’t even stop at his business associates,” Enjeti said.

Weinstein appeared at a New York Court on Monday for the beginning of his criminal trial.

That same day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced that Weinstein had been charged with raping one woman and sexually assaulting another.

He has pleaded not guilty to both charges and has repeatedly maintained that all sexual acts were consensual.
