Seventeen percent of Republican voters support President Trump’s impeachment and say he should be removed from office, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released Monday.
The figure in the Jan. 8-9 survey marks a 3 percentage point increase from a similar poll conducted in late October.
The overall share of voters who support Trump’s impeachment and removal from office was little changed at 48 percent, up 1 point from the October survey.
The share of Democratic voters who favor impeachment stood at 80 percent, down 1 point from October, while independents who backed impeachment ticked up 1 point to 42 percent.
The latest survey comes as the Senate prepares for Trump’s impeachment trial.
After a weeks-long standoff with Republicans on the rules of the upcoming Senate trial, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is expected to send the two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — to the upper chamber later this week.
After the articles are sent, a trial is expected to begin almost immediately. But with 67 votes needed for conviction, Trump is all but guaranteed to be acquitted by the GOP-controlled Senate.
There is still some debate over whether Trump’s trial will include witness testimony. Even though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has made it clear that he would prefer no witness, Democrats need just four Republicans to agree to call witnesses such as former national security adviser John Bolton.
The Hill-HarrisX survey polled 1,002 registered voters nationwide and has a margin or error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The margin of error is 5.4 points among GOP voters, 4.9 points among Democratic voters and 6.3 points among independents.
