Ryan Grim, Washington, D.C., bureau chief for The Intercept, said Tuesday that both former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) should urge their supporters not to vote in Tuesday’s primaries amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
“At the bear minimum, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders need to publicly tell their supporters … that they should not vote,” Grim told Hill.TV.
In spite of the continuous spread of COVID-19 in the U.S., three states – Arizona, Illinois and Florida – are all hosting their Democratic primaries Tuesday.
On Monday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) called off the primary, saying that polling places would put voters and poll workers at too great a risk.
Specifically, there has been great concern over how America’s older population would fair after a day at the polls. Health experts have recommended that senior citizens in the country stay in their homes. Tracking data of the virus shows that the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are most susceptible to fatal complications from COVID-19.
Overall in the U.S. there have been over 5,500 confirmed cases of the virus with at least 100 deaths.
