Kentucky Senate contender Rep. Charles Booker (D) said Thursday that his potential opponent, Senate Majority Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), “has been screwing us for decades.”
Booker said the senator has been in office for his “entire life.”
“We know he’s terrible,” he said. “He’s been screwing us for decades, so just turning him down isn’t enough.”
“And that’s why my message is resonating because I’m saying that this is bigger than him,” Booker continued. “In fact, it’s not even about him, it’s about the people of Kentucky.”
The Kentucky representative called for “real change” for the state instead of the “political status quo,” saying its residents are “suffering.” He said he is the better Democratic candidate because he’s “not a pro-Trump Democrat.”
“We cannot afford to just play the same game that is running to a soft center … not really getting into issues, not having a vision. Listen, we’re tired of that,” he said.
Booker will face Amy McGrath in the Democratic primary.
McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot, was endorsed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee earlier this year.
The Kentucky primary has been postponed from May 19 to June 23 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
