Journalist Zaid Jilani said Monday that the U.S. cities experiencing riots will see “bad outcomes for years to come.”
Jilani told Hill.TV that these “bad outcomes” will occur in cities that didn’t plan for riots and didn’t “establish a relationship you need to prevent the rioting.”
“They’re gonna see bad outcomes for years to come including increased homicide rates, economic devastation, empowering of hardliners of the right and the political right,” he said.
“I think we really have to think through the outcomes of what’s happening here, so we can respond to these events in the most compassionate and effective way,” he added.
Jilani pointed out on Hill.TV’s Rising that many people believe rioting will bring “liberation around the corner” and “great outcomes for everyone involved.”
“But actually, historically in the United States and elsewhere rioting is a sign of large scale disorder and chaos,” he said. “It generally has negative social, political and economic outcomes.”
Cities across the country have erupted into protests in the past few days after a black man named George Floyd died after being detained by police in Minneapolis.
A video shot by bystanders showed former officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes as Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter and fired from the police department.
