The Intercept’s D.C. Bureau Chief Ryan Grim discussed Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker’s (D) Senate campaign in a Tuesday interview with Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
“[President] Donald Trump is expected to win the state by something like 20 points. In order for a Democrat to win the Senate race, statewide, he or she has to peel off roughly 10 percent of that vote,” Grim said.
“Booker’s argument would be, ‘Look, I am a working class populist. I believe that everybody, whether you grew up in Appalachia or West Louisville, should have an equal opportunity. And look, you’re going to vote for Donald Trump, you probably feel bad about voting for Donald Trump, so salvage your conscience by going for Trump-Booker,’” Grim added.
Booker is one of three Democrats seeking to challenge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the fall.
Booker is running as a progressive and has been gaining traction in recent weeks amid protests in Kentucky as he contrasts his campaign with his toughest primary challenger, Amy McGrath. The primary is scheduled for June 23.
