Princeton professor Eddie Glaude said Thursday the work of novelist and activist James Baldwin has helped him in finding his own voice and grappling with the election of President Trump and current race relations in the U.S.
Glaude said on Hill.TV’s “Rising” that in his new book, “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own,” he was interested in figuring out how Baldwin “managed with betrayal.”
“How did he deal with the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? How did he deal with the election of Richard Nixon … all the way up to the election of [Ronald] Reagan, because I thought that perhaps the way in which he dealt with that betrayal would offer us resources in our own moment,” Glaude said.
“Trying in some ways to deal with my despair, my own disillusionment, with the election of Donald Trump in 2016,” he added. “And it turned out what I found … was more than resources, I found my own voice in some ways to say something directly to our current moment.”
