Attorney and former New York gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout (D) told Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Wednesday that some corporations in the U.S. have become so powerful, they seem to operate as private governments or regulatory bodies.
In an interview with co-hosts Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti, Teachout said that presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden should seek to curb corporate power if elected in November, citing the consolidated power companies like Facebook, Tyson Foods, Amazon and others have over their respective industries.
This power, she maintains, creates inequality and powerlessness.
“Look at something like Amazon: They squeeze small businesses and decide who fails or who succeeds. So it’s a feudal system, not an open market,” Teachout said.
“The effect is incredible inequality, an incredible degree of powerlessness, and we just haven’t done anything about it for over 40 years.”
“Who’s doing privacy police in America? Facebook. Google. And we all act like that, we even accept it,” she added.
