Ryan Grim, The Intercept’s Washington bureau chief, rejected on Hill.TV on Tuesday the claim that the “insurgent” Democratic movement is “inherently racist,” pointing to Cori Bush’s primary defeat of Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.).
Grim told Hill.TV’s “Rising” that Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members have “repeatedly” made claims that the leftist candidates supported by Justice Democrats aiming to take out incumbents are “inherently racist.”
“You would say, ‘Well, how on earth are you making that reasoning when all of the candidates that Justice Democrats are supporting are people of color and the leadership of Justice Democrats are people of color?’” Grim said.
“And the answer goes back to their view of what the left is,” he added, saying CBC members view the leftist movement as “white progressives in Brooklyn.”
“Therefore, anything that is kind of rooted in that as a base is inherently racist and is going after incumbent members of the CBC, who have earned their place in Congress and are being disrespected by this movement,” he said.
“But that is utterly disrupted by Cori Bush’s election last week,” Grim said, pointing to the Black Lives Matter advocate’s upset win against Clay, who held the seat for two decades. Clay’s father held the seat before him.
