Trump campaign aide previews convention speech

Trump campaign spokesperson Marc Lotter said President Trump has worked to give Americans a glimpse of the inner workings of his job during his appearances this week at the Republican National Convention and that his acceptance speech Thursday will provide an optimistic view of the direction of the country.

“I think having the president involved each night is giving the viewers at home, whether they’re watching online or on television, a glimpse into the various activities of the president,” Lotter said on Hill.TV’s “Rising” Wednesday, citing the president’s pardon of a former bank robber and conduction of a naturalization ceremony for five immigrants Tuesday.

“I think it’s been great, it’s been positive, it’s been uplifting, and tomorrow night you’re going to see the president talk about not just the successes that we’ve already had, but where he wants to go and the fact that we can deal with the challenges we have in our country and still never question our ultimate success, because we’re America.”

Trump has appeared at convention events Monday and Tuesday night and is anticipated to do so again on Wednesday. His appearances from the White House have rankled Democrats who say he is violating federal ethics laws prohibiting government figures from using their official capacities for political purposes, claims Lotter denied.

“First and foremost, the Hatch Act doesn’t apply to the president and vice president, they’re specifically exempted from the Hatch Act,” he said. “But secondly, I think what we’re seeing here is the president using the opportunity to showcase what it’s like to be president and some of the great things he’s doing, and that centers around the White House.”

“I understand that some folks in Washington, D.C. are probably up in arms about norms, but folks out across America, I don’t think they see that, I think they just see the president doing his job,” he concluded.
