Jacob Blake Sr., the father of Jacob Blake, who was shot by police in Kenosha, Wis., last month, on Thursday reacted to a Kentucky grand jury’s announcement the day before bringing no charges against police officers in the killing of Breonna Taylor.
“A young lady’s life was lost, a young person, a human being’s life was lost, because of the inadequacies of the police. So if they’re not responsible, then who?” Blake Sr. said on The Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
The jury announced three counts of wanton endangerment against Louisville police officer Brett Hankison not directly tied to the fatal shooting of Taylor, and no charges from her killing or for the other officers involved.
Blake Sr. and his family have been pushed into the national spotlight amid protests over police brutality in wake of recent cases of police brutality against Black Americans, including his son, Taylor and George Floyd.
Rising host Krystal Ball asked Blake Sr. what he thinks success would look like from this movement.
“Success is for me and you to walk down the street together understanding that we have no fear of being pulled over,” he responded. “Understanding that we will be treated as human beings, as humanity. Humanity is being mistreated, so it’s not just brown people, it’s all peoples but until we look at it like it’s all people and not just some people then it won’t be everybody.”
