Marshall Kosloff, a media fellow at Hudson Institute media, said the presidential debates’ main purpose this cycle is to help legitimize the election as uncertainty over mail-in ballots and other issues hovers over the process.
“Moving forward, I honestly don’t feel like there’s much purpose to the debates beyond demonstrating this process is legitimate,” Kosloff said on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” noting questions over an anticipated flood of mail-in ballots and the prospect that the Supreme Court may need to get involved to dictate the results.
“Probably I’m depressed to say we should continue the debates just so that there are no examples of, ‘see, this side cheated, or that side was operating in bad faith,’” he added.
The remarks come a day after President Trump and former Vice President Biden met for their first debate, which was filled with vicious invective and little policy discussion, raising questions as to the debates’ effectiveness.
